Sara, Age 17

Sara is a 17-year-old girl who has the diagnosis of left hemiplegia due to 2 episodes of cancerous brain tumor and removal. She has severe left upper extremity spasticity specifically in her finger flexors. This spasticity has caused her hand to be fisted and it frequently cramps at night and the pain keeps her awake. She found that using a whole body vibration board in therapy helps her arm stay relaxed so she can not only use it in her daily activities but she can sleep at night. Her insurance company denied her request for a vibration board in her home.  MPFC awarded Sara a $1,000 grant for a vibration board so that she may see improvement with her severe spasticity.

“I  want to say thank you for giving me the vibration board. The vibration board is going to be a big support for me because I think that if I’m able to use the vibration board each day, it is going to help me use my hand more. I try to use both of my hands when doing a task but it always seems impossible to do so, and that discourages me but does not stop me.  The vibration board is a good support for my hand because after I use the board I feel more relaxed and my hand stays relaxed for about 2 days. The muscles of my hands are tight and I feel pain in my hand, but after I use the vibration board the muscles of my hand feel less tight and I feel less pain.  Now that I’m able to use this vibration board it will increase my spirits to do more tasks with both of my hands.Thank you so much and I really appreciate you for giving me the vibration board. I will for sure take advantage of it.” – Sara
